However, their meanings differ: while "power" is defined as "the ability to influence somebody to do something that (s)he could not have done", "authority" refers to a claim of legitimacy, the justification and right to exercise that power. For example, whilst a mob has the power to punish a criminal, for example by lynching, people who believe in the rule of law consider that only a court of law to has the authority to order capital punishment. Since the emergence of the social sciences, authority has been a subject of research in a variety of empirical settings; the family (parental authority), small groups (informal authority of leadership), intermediate organizations, such as schools, churches, armies, industries and bureaucracies (organizational and bureaucratic authorities) and society-wide or inclusive organizations, ranging from the most primitive tribal society to the modern nation-state and intermediate organization (political authority). The jurisdiction of political authority, the location of sovereignty, the balancing of freedom and authority (cf. Cristi, 2005) and the requirements of political obligations have been core questions, for political philosophers, from Plato and Aristotle, to the present.

GNU Free Documentation License authority? Q. alright one more question how many people here have seen someone blatantly abuse authority(i.e. teacher, boss)? i was wondering what people think about the hierarchy it seems like we have inside whats supposed to be a free country thoughts? Asked by colton L - Fri Oct 26 15:24:50 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. This is why we say "question authority" not as a rebellious statement but to keep everything in check. Speaking of check, that's why the government is set up with checks and balances and is ultimately responsible to the people. Answered by Pirate AM - Fri Oct 26 15:30:16 2007 What authority do I contact to report or press federal charges for forging a signature on government document? Q. I recently received a contract to renew my contract for my section 8 voucher for on of their Housing Authority Properties. It can clearly be seen on the document, that my signature was lifted from a contract I signed a few months ago, and placed on a new contract with an increased amount. The copy machine and white out spots can be seen clearly, and possibly submitted to an appropriate authority as forensic proof that my signature was fraudulently and illegally placed on the new contract. Can someone please help me with the process? Asked by take_it_slow - Sat Aug 23 15:41:00 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. You need to file a complaint with the HUD Office of Inspector General You can also contact the US Attorney's Office in your state and inform them what has occurred and then determine what course of action you can take to remedy the problem Answered by J - Sat Aug 23 15:50:46 2008 Does the Congress have the constitutional authority to delegate its powers?
Q. Likewise does departments of the government have authority to delegate their duties. I'm thinking of the Treasury Department that uses the IRS for collection of income taxes and if the IRS is a quasi-private body- how can they be represented by the Justice Department? Asked by doubleolly - Thu Oct 25 15:18:27 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. Congress has the authority to pass laws that authorize departments to create regulations concerning specific subjects. Congress created the FCC and the FCC creates rules that regulate the use of the RF spectrum. A government department can outsource operations to contractors. The IRS is not a "quasi-private body". It has no private ownership of any kind. It is a division of the Treasury Department. It is more a government department than the postal service. I have asked time and time again for ANYONE to show me a reference to anything that is not an opinion piece that shows that the IRS is anything other than a government agency. No one can.
