An author (sometimes, in reference to a woman author, authoress) is defined both as "the person who originates or gives existence to anything" and that authorship determines responsibility for what is created. The second entry goes on to clarify that, when using the term "author," the "anything" which is created is most usually associated with written work. Author of a written workFrom Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How to cite an author in a book authored by many people? Q. I am working on an essay and I want to quote a few sentences from a book of speeches presented at an event. Each speech has their own individual author. How can I properly display this source in MLA format in my bibliography? Asked by guy - Sun Oct 19 21:03:54 2008 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments A. Sorry, I don't know what MLA stands for, so don't know their particular format ... but a reasonable approximation would seem to be, first to credit the author in just the same way as you would if the quotation were from his own book (for example, "King, Martin L., 'I Have A Dream'"); and then second, within the same citation, the word, "in," followed by the name of the editor of the book containing the speeches, and the book's title, somewhat along these lines ... Example citation: King, Martin L., "I Have A Dream," in Jones, Milton A., ed., Famous American Speeches, New York: Random House, 1975. Naturally, you would adjust that to comply with as much of the MLA format you're familiar with; but it would have to be more or less like… [cont.] Answered by waynea - Tue Oct 21 22:49:24 2008 How do I cite a quote or paraphrase my author derived from another source? If you are using APA style, Purdue University's Online Writing Lab recommends the following: "If you use a source that was cited in another source, name the original source in your signal phrase. List the secondary source in your reference list and include the secondary source in the parentheses. Johnson argued that...(as cited in Smith, 2003, p. 102)." For MLA, they recommend the following: "Citing Indirect Sources Sometimes you may have to use an indirect source. An indirect source is a source cited in another source. For such indirect quotations, use "qtd. in" to indicate the source you actually consulted. For example: Ravitch argues that high schools are pressured to act as "social service centers, and they don't do that well" (qtd. Q. Where would I look to find that info? I enjoy a particular author, and have read most of what she's written. I have heard she also writes under other names. How do I find these? Asked by thejanith - Sat Jun 7 22:10:14 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Check Fantastic Fiction for one thing. For instance, you'll notice quite a number of names under Jean Plaidy. If the author is listed here, they should have her various pen names. You can also check Wikipedia (I did a search for Jean Plaidy again). Other than that, you could try to find her official web site, which should tell you any pseudonyms the author uses. I hope this helps.
